New Safe Place for youths
Family Connection, which aids at-risk young people, has added a Safe Place location where abused and runaway youths can go for help.
Dairy Queen, 780 Colonial Promenade Parkway, Alabaster, is the newest of the 73 Safe Place locations in Shelby County, Hoover and Irondale.
Other locations include fire departments, public libraries, grocery stores and gas stations that have agreed to offer safe haven to youths, said Carol Williams, Safe Place coordinator.
Each Safe Place displays a yellow and black sign, and employees are trained by Family Connection on how to assist youths in need, Williams said.
Williams said to find a Safe Place close by, young people can text in their phone the word SAFE and the street, city and state of their location to 69866. They will receive a text message identifying the nearest Safe Place.
