The Falcon Scholars in Action program is a partnership between the University of Montevallo, Shelby County and various agencies in Shelby County. Family Connection is one of the agencies in this partnership where Scholars serve by helping to build capacity and offer services to the children, youth and families that our agency serves. The Scholars are students at the University who have excelled academically and have demonstrated a commitment to serving those in the community. Approximately twenty-five students are selected each semester by the University and the Scholars serve 10-15 hours per week at the agency.
"The Falcon Scholars have been a huge help to the residential program. They have allowed us to provide an even lower staff to resident ratio so that our services are even more individualized. The youth are getting more help with school work than ever. Also, they have helped build capacity that has allowed our clinical staff to devote even more time to individual and family counseling. The Falcon Scholars have been a blessing for Family Connection. We are grateful for all that they do at Family Connection!"
-Kevin Keane, Residential Program Director
The first Scholars arrived at Family Connection on September 1, 2009. Those scholars are Teresa Whiting, T.J. Jones and Carrie Robbins. Visit our Image Gallery to see their pictures.
These Scholars have specifically helped Family Connection by leading life skills groups, community service groups, tutoring students, facilitating recreation activities, helping with fundraisers, helping with newsletters and assisting with the daily operations of our Residential Care Program. The Falcon Scholars have made a vital contribution to helping strengthen communities by building strong and healthy families!
"The Falcon Scholars have really stepped up and been a big help to myself and the other residential program workers. They do groups and recreational activities with the youth, as well as just helping out with every day needs around the shelter. I have enjoyed having them around, as I'm sure the other workers and youth have as well."
-Brandi Horton, Residential Counselor
"The Falcon Scholars have helped with my program by leading groups and other activities for the residents, which allows me to be available to provide more family counseling sessions in the afternoons."
-Peter Bowling, TOPS Program Counselor
